All four iPhone 16 phones could end up using the same SoC

In a rather surprising turn of events, all four iPhone 16 models could end up using the same SoC. Based on the information provided by MacRumors, this could happen.

Why is this surprising? Well, Apple used last year’s chip in vanilla iPhone 15 models, and a new chip in iPhone 15 Pro models models. The same was expected to happen next year. Last month, Jeff Pu, a well-known analyst, said that the iPhone 16 will likely utilize the Apple A18 chip, while the iPhone 16 Pro models will utilize the Apple A18 Pro processor.

Let’s get back to this new information. The source managed to get ahold of some information regarding early development versions of iOS 18. Its codename is ‘Crystal’, by the way. Based on that info, the iPhone 16 is codenamed D47, the iPhone 16 Plus D48, the iPhone 16 Pro D93, and the iPhone 16 Pro Max D94.

What is interesting is that data reveals that all four of these phones have the same processor. They use a chip with the internal code ‘t8140’, also known as Tahiti. This chip is also known as the Apple A18.

On the flip side, these two chips could be very similar, and yet a bit different at the same time. Apple could always slap the ‘Pro’ tag after the fact, and tweak things to give it some sort of an edge.

Only time will tell which report is accurate

Both options are possible at this point in time. We’ll surely get more information moving forward, but the iPhone 16 series launch is still far away. Those four smartphones are expected to land in September 2024.

Apple is not expected to make major design changes with its iPhone 16 series, though nothing has been confirmed yet. The company is expected to ditch the pill-shaped camera cutout for a hole punch at some point in the future, but that almost certainly won’t happen next year.
