Google has a lot of upgrades for the Pixel 7a this year, and that includes every single camera getting upgraded.

That’s right, Google has upgraded all three camera sensors on the Pixel 7a. Starting with the main camera. That’s now a 64-megapixel sensor, which can record at up to 4K60, and has a 82-degree field-of-view.

Next up is the ultrawide camera, which is now a 13-megapixel sensor. It is able to record at 4K30, and has a 120-degree field-of-view. And then finally, we have the new 13-megapixel front-facing camera. This one is also able to shoot at up to 4K30, and has a pretty wide field-of-view, of about 95-degrees.

On paper, these are better cameras than the Pixel 7, but not so fast

If you just look at the specs, you’ll think that the Pixel 7a has better cameras than the Pixel 7 or Pixel 7 Pro. But that’s not necessarily true.

While the Pixel 7 has a 50-megapixel main sensor, 12-megapixel ultrawide and a 10.8-megapixel front-facing camera, these are still better sensors. You see, these sensors are larger than what the Pixel 7a has. Which also explains why the camera bump is not as thick, compared to the more expensive models.

In day-to-day usage, you likely won’t notice this. Where you will really notice it is, in low-light and dark situations. But even then, it might be tough to notice it, since Google does such a good job with computation photography. Some details might be stronger on a picture taken with the Pixel 7 versus the Pixel 7a.

This is still a huge upgrade for the Pixel 7a this year, after being stuck with the same 12-megapixel main sensor since the Pixel 2, and the same 12-megapixel ultrawide since the Pixel 5. But if you’re thinking that this is why you should buy the Pixel 7a over the Pixel 7, it’s not.
