This Lenovo laptop has a trick up its sleeve (Hands On)

Lenovo is known for coming out with some very interesting products, particularly at CES. And this year is no different.

This year, Lenovo is debuting the ThinkBook Plus Gen 5 Hybrid. This is a Windows laptop that allows the screen to detach and turn into an Android tablet. Giving you a 14-inch tablet that you can use on the go. It’s a stunning 14-inch tablet with a 2.8K OLED Display, and it really reminds me of Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra, which has a similar screen size and is also OLED.

Basically, Lenovo has put a processor, RAM, and storage into the display and into the base. The base sports the Intel Ultra Core 7 processor, 32GB of RAM, and a 1TB SSD. The tablet itself runs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor, has 12GB of RAM, and has 256GB of storage. So, both parts of this laptop are pretty high-end. And in the short time I had to play around with it, it does live up to the hype. Both operating systems were pretty smooth on the ThinkBook Plus Gen 5 Hybrid, but it wasn’t the final software, and the OS was somewhat limited during our hands-on time.

It’s super easy to detach the screen

One thing I was worried about with this laptop was how hard it would be to detach the screen. And it’s actually fairly easy. Now it does need to be at almost a 90-degree angle to actually detach. But then it’s a simple pull of the tablet off of the base. It’s easy, but not so easy that it’s going to fall off when you don’t want it too. Lenovo is using a locking mechanism here, as well as magnets to keep them together.

This is a pretty cool product from Lenovo, and out of a bunch of the weird products that Lenovo tends to announce every year, this is the first one that I could actually see people buying. The only downside is the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 on the tablet, while everything else is the latest and greatest. It would have been great to see at least the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 on here, if not the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. But the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 is still a very capable processor.

Lenovo is expecting the ThinkBook Plus Gen 5 Hybrid to launch in the second quarter (so that’s April through June) and it will be priced at $1,999.
