With the Google Pixel 8, the search giant has added quite a few generative AI features, including one that we’re quite fond of here at AndroidHeadlines. And that is AI Wallpapers. The wallpaper on your phone is pretty important. It’s something that you’re going to see all the time, and you want it to look great, but not interfere with widgets and apps that are on your home screen. It’s something that we generally change up quite often.
Google makes it pretty easy to generate a new wallpaper with AI, and surprisingly, quite a few of them look really great. Here’s how you can create your own AI Wallpaper on the Google Pixel 8.
How to make an AI Wallpaper on Google Pixel 8
From your home screen, you will want to long-press on the home screen. Then tap on “Wallpaper & style”.
Now, tap on “More wallpapers” this option will be below the colors and other wallpapers you can use.
On this next page, you’ll see a bunch of wallpapers you can use, including those pictures on your phone. But here, you’ll want to choose “AI Wallpaper”.
The next step is to choose a theme to get started. As of right now, Google has Imaginary, Luminous, Mineral, Painting, X-ray, Texture, Night, Bloom, Terrain, Soft-focus, Translucent and Volcanic. Tap on the theme you want to use for your new wallpaper.
Once you choose you theme, you can now choose a few other variables to help the AI create your wallpaper. For example, here we choose “Imaginary”, so the prompt now allows us to change it from a castle to something else like a bicycle, boat, building, etc. We can also change Silk to a few other different materials like burlap, chiffon, etc. And the last option is going to be the colors. Google has put together a handful of color pairs that you can choose from.
Now that you’ve chosen what you want, in a sort of madlibs style picker, tap on “Create wallpaper”.
It’ll take a minute or so to create your wallpapers. Once it does, you’ll be given a handful of wallpapers that you can choose from. Swipe through and find one you like. Then you can tap on the checkmark in the upper-right hand corner to set it as your wallpaper. You can also send feedback to Google on each wallpaper with the thumbs up and thumbs down icons in the right corner too.
Now this wallpaper will show up underneath your AI Wallpapers in the Wallpaper section. So you can swap them whenever you want.
And that’s how you can create an AI Wallpaper on your Google Pixel 8.
Does this work only on the Google Pixel 8?
Yes. For now, this is limited to the Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. It will likely make its way down to older Google Pixel devices with a future Feature Drop. But it’s unlikely to be available for other Android phones. However, we will likely see other OEMs create similar features.
Can you create your own prompts?
No, unfortunately this is pretty limited right now. Google has a handful of themes, and other prompts you can choose from, but it’s not quite limitless. That might change in the future, as this is still a very new feature for Google and the Pixel 8.
What is Generative AI?
Generative AI is a type of machine learning that can be used to create new content. This can be text, images, music, audio and/or videos. In this feature, Google is using Generative AI to create images for wallpapers. The AI is able to learn the patterns and structure of their input training data and then generate new data that will have similar characteristics. This is one of the main reasons why so many artists are unhappy with Generative AI, as they feel their work is being ripped off.
