As many of you know by now, the Google app was categorized as a virus on some Huawei and HONOR phones. That news managed to get a lot of attention lately, and Huawei now offered an explanation.
Huawei explains why Google app was marked as a virus
First and foremost, it’s worth noting that the virus detection and removal engine on Huawei devices comes from Avast. Huawei says that some contents of the latest Google app version (released on October 27) have been modified. Those modifications made Avast trigger the virus infection prompt.
Huawei says that it’s aware of this issue, very much so. It offered a solution, which we’ll talk about in a bit. If you do have any inquiries, though, Huawei did say you can always visit the company’s support hotline via the official website.
Here is how you can fix the problem
That being said, here’s what you can do if you have this problem. You’ll need to navigate to Settings -> Apps -> Apps -> Optimizer -> Storage -> Clear Cache & Clear Data.
Once you do that, open the Optimizer app. In it, click ‘Settings’ in the upper right corner. Following that, select Wi-Fi and mobile data for Antivirus software update. Once you do that, the ‘Update Complete’ message should be displayed. You should be connected to the internet, of course.
At that point, you can open the Google app and check whether the problem has been removed, it should be. So, based on this guideline, the problem has been removed on Avast’s side too, but an update is required.
This issue managed to annoy quite a few people, but mistakes happen. This time around it was due to Avast’s software, it seems. It’s not something Huawei or Avast could have predicted, due to Google’s changes in its Android app. Just follow the steps below, and the problem should be fixed.
