The iOS 16.4 update finally makes Google Fi 5G available to iPhone users, XDA reports.
Even though iPhones have been using 5G connectivity since iPhone 12 upwards, Google Fi was unavailable to Apple customers due to software lock. However, the Google Fi Twitter account officially announced iPhone running on iOS 16.4 can now connect to the company’s 5G network.
According to Google’s announcement, only iPhone 12 and above that run iOS 16.4 are supported. Google also provided iPhone users with a guide on how to connect Fi 5G network.
Google Fi 5G is now available to iPhones running iOS 16.4
If you’re using iPhone 12 and above models, you can simply connect to Google Fi 5G. First, Go to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Voice & Data or Cellular > tap on your Google Fi number > Voice & Data. Finally, select 5G Auto. The US residents will also see LTE and 5G On options here. Google Fi provides you with a map to check the 5G coverage in your region.
Selecting 5G Auto allows the phone to switch between available networks automatically. This will ensure that the phone stays connected to a network all the time.
Here is a list of Apple iPhones that are compatible with Google Fi in general: iPhone 14 series, iPhone 13 series, iPhone 12 series, iPhone 11, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, iPhone X, iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, iPhone 6S and 6S Plus, iPhone SE. All phones must also run iOS 13 and up.
Google Fi is currently operating on T-Mobile and US Cellular networks, and its coverage has expanded in the past few years. The plans are also affordable, with many perks like unlimited talk and text.
Speaking of 5G connectivity and Google, the company has recently dropped support for 5G SA in some older Pixel phones with the March update. The impacted phones are all powered by Snapdragon chipsets. Users hope to regain access to 5G SA by the April update.
