LG is one of those companies that do just about everything. It’s a large multimedia tech company that’s the foundation of many people’s entertainment experiences. While that’s true, the company is still looking to expand its entertainment operating system to more devices. LG is going to expand WebOS to 100 million more devices within the next couple of years, according to SamMobile.
LG has been expanding its businesses since leaving the smartphone industry. However, it’s still working on technology for smartphones going forward. The company has been working on Metalenses for cameras, which can drastically reduce camera size. Also, LG is still supplying OLED panels to Apple for its iPhones. This is on top of collaborating with Samsung on battery technology.
LG is going to expand WebOS to 100 million more devices
WebOs is LG’s entertainment operating system. It’s present on LG’s smart TVs and its line of home appliances. It’s already running on more than 200 million devices around the world. However, the company announced that it’s going to be expanding.
LG announced during the LG WebOS Partner Summit 2023 that it’s going to invest KRW 1 trillion ($753 million USD) into expanding WebOS into 100 million more devices. It hopes to achieve this within the next three years. So, we can expect to see more devices on the market that run this operating system.
Along with delivering more devices with WebOS, the company will also use the investment to make the experience better. This will include increasing the amount of content available through the platform. LG plans on strengthening partnerships with different content creation services throughout the world and pushing improvements to the UI.
One notable announcement during the summit was the company’s focus on AI. Now, LG is not coming out with an AI chatbot or anything. Instead, the company wants to create a VUI (voice user interface). This could allow users to navigate the software using only their voice. The company will implement this VUI into its partners’ apps, so the experience will be seamless.
So, this seems like pretty standard fare for an LG event. The company is always working on something new, and this new focus on WebOS will be good for the people who use its products.
