HMD Global, the Finnish company that makes Nokia phones, is here with its latest offering. The firm has launched the Nokia G42 5G, a mid-range smartphone with a focus on repairability. The device packs a decent set of specs as well, certainly fitting for its price.
Nokia G42 5G specs
The Nokia G42 5G features a 6.5-inch HD+ display with a 90Hz refresh rate and 560 nits of peak brightness. The notched LCD screen (V-shaped/waterdrop notch) comes with Gorilla Glass 3 protection, while the rest of the body is made from recycled plastic. Under the hood is Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 480+ 5G processor paired with 4GB/6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The phone offers virtual RAM support and takes in MicroSD cards of up to 1TB.
For photography, the Nokia G42 5G gives you a 50MP primary shooter with autofocus. You also get a 2MP depth sensor and a 2MP macro camera. The phone has an LED flash on the back, while the notch on the front houses an 8MP selfie camera. Connectivity options include 5G, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.1, and NFC (via). This phone supports all major satellite navigation systems to track your location and comes with a 3.5mm headphone jack.
The Nokia G42 5G is fueled by a 5,000mAh battery that is rated to retain 80 percent of its capacity after 800 charging cycles. Speaking of charging, the device charges at a maximum speed of 20W. Other highlights include an IP52 rating for dust and water resistance, a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, and face unlock support. The handset runs Android 13 out of the box, with the company promising three years of monthly security updates and two major OS upgrades.
As said earlier, HMD Global has focused on repairability with the Nokia G42 5G. The company is continuing its partnership with renowned repair firm iFixit, which began with the Nokia G22 earlier this year. Through this partnership, the two firms provide buyers of these phones with repair guides, tools, and replacement parts (purchased separately) for some components, including the display, battery, and charging port.
Price and availability
The Nokia G42 5G is available in So Grey and So Purple colors. The company has priced the 6GB+128GB variant of the phone at €249 in Europe, $199 in the US, and £199 in the UK. Pricing details of the 4GB RAM variant, which will be limited to select markets, are not known. Should you need to repair the phone shortly after buying it, you can get a new screen at €50, a replacement battery at €25, and a replacement charging port at €20/£19.
