Razer today at CES has announced increased efforts to become more sustainable by using recycled materials in its gaming peripherals. PC accessories including mice, headsets, and keyboards will all be using recycled materials during their manufacturing process.
This helps Razer ultimately cut down on the amount of material waste produced as well as reduce environmental impact. Mice like the Razer DeathAdder V2 X HyperSpeed are now made with 40% recycled materials. The company says its Ornata V3 Clicky gaming keyboard is made with about 20% recycled materials. Right now Razer is only focusing on core PC peripherals. But it plans to expand on which peripherals are made with this same sustainability effort in the future. Which could and likely will eventually include those made for console or other platforms like mobile.
Peripherals that are manufactured following this sustainability effort will come with a specific UL 2809 ECOLOGO label on the packaging. So there won’t be any mistaking which accessories use this process and which ones don’t. The two accessories mentioned above are currently the only two products that use recycled materials. However, Razer is already beginning to include other product models from its core PC peripheral lineup. The company says that starting from 2024 onwards, all core PC peripheral launches will be part of this program.
Recycled materials will only be used in Razer peripherals in the black colorway
Razer’s latest efforts to “go green” are admirable and they showcase a rather long history of the company making strides in trying to reduce its environmental impact.
That being said, for now, Razer’s use of recycled materials in manufacturing will only apply to the products that come in the black colorway. This isn’t a bad thing, really. As Razer likely has to put all its products through a long and complex recycling process that involves breaking everything down so they can eventually be repurposed. And that kind of thing takes time. It’s also worth noting that Razer really only offered black peripherals for quite some time. So it probably has access to more of those materials than its products in other colorways.
Razer says more product categories will be added over time. It’s also working to find better, and more sustainable solutions for making its products more recyclable. This effort aims to reduce the amount of environmental impact each product has at the end of its life cycle.
