Google says that its Android partners, including Samsung, are committed to longer update support moving forward. Announced at Mobile World Congress this week, the effort is all in an attempt to make sure users stay connected. Since its beginning, Android has had one issue that has stuck out more than most. Software updates. While most brands tend to update their devices at least once when it comes to major OS releases, many don’t support their devices for long.
This fragmentation is generally the biggest hurdle that Android has a platform. Though it is worth mentioning that over the years, Google and its Android partners have gotten much better at keeping devices updated. And it seems it’s only going to get better moving forward.
Samsung isn’t the only partner committed so longer Android update support
Samsung is easily the biggest partner here, but it’s hardly the only partner. In its blog post, Google confirms that Samsung, Xiaomi, OPPO, and OnePlus are all committed to supporting Android for longer periods of time. This includes both OS updates and security updates. Ensuring that devices (like the Galaxy S23)are kept up to date with new features and kept safe.
The goal here is to extend the lifetime of devices. This way users don’t have to replace them as often. In the long run, this benefits both the company and the user. Brands like Samsung are recognized as an Android partner that keeps its devices updated and fresh for as long as possible. And the user saves money, should they choose to keep their device longer.
Google doesn’t mention any specific lengths of time here. But longer support for OS and security updates, regardless of how long it is, is a good thing. Of course, that doesn’t necessarily mean updates will start pumping out faster. But at the very least they’ll hit devices for longer than they used to.
