According to a new rumor, Sony is working on its very first foldable smartphone. Now, to be more precise, the company is working on a clamshell foldable smartphone, not a book-style one.

Sony is seemingly working on its very first foldable smartphone

Based on the info from Sumahodigest, a Japanese outlet, Sony’s handset will resemble the Galaxy Z Flip 4, but it won’t include an outer display. Why? Well, Sony wants to make a truly compact foldable device.

In fact, the source hints that this could be a revival of the ‘Xperia Compact’ series, in a way. Sony wants to make this the go-to smartphone for people who want a truly compact smartphone.

This foldable device could bear the ‘Xperia Fold’ name, based on some rumors, though we’re not convinced. The ‘Fold’ is usually used for book-style foldables, thanks to Samsung, so it would be odd to see it attached to a clamshell foldable. There’s always a possibility it will happen, though, of course.

The company recently announced its brand new flagship

This smartphone, if it ends up happening, will likely have rather powerful specs. As a reminder, Sony recently announced its new flagship, the Xperia 1 V. It also has another high-end smartphone planned for H2 this year.

The device in question is the Xperia 5 V. That will basically be a smaller variant of the Xperia 1 V, and also a variant that is a bit inferior to Sony’s flagship. That was, at least, the case with the previous iterations.

In any case, it would be nice to see Sony’s take on a foldable smartphone, of course. It would also bring more competition to the foldable smartphone market, and that’s exactly what we need, especially in markets outside of China.

More competition will push the industry forward, and it will also decrease the prices of foldables over time. Not to mention that it would be great to see more compact devices being available in the market.
