AT&T announced today at MWC Barcelona, that the company has been chosen as the exclusive connectivity partner for Lucid’s lineup of EVs.
This announcement means that AT&T is now available in over 60 automotive brands. This includes GM (Chevy, Buick, Cadillac, GMC), Ford, Audi and many others. Most use AT&T to power services like a mobile hotspot or something like OnStar, Ford Sync.
With Lucid, AT&T will be used for things like telematics, diagnostics, streaming audio and intelligent navigation. Which will help the car route to maximize its driving range and minimize any charging stops. Of course, the Lucid Air does have a range of up to 516 miles (EPA tested), so you’ll more likely need a break before the car does.
Lucid Motors’ Senior Vice President, Michael Bell stated that “the strength of AT&T’s network and IoT leadership in the connected car space are key reasons Lucid chose AT&T to connect our vehicles. The automotive industry is on the move and together, Lucid and AT&T are creating new possibilities for drivers and vehicles.”
By 2030, 95% of vehicles are expected to be connected
AT&T has been working hard to expand its offerings in the past decade or so. While getting more smartphone users might be tough, AT&T has been adding millions of vehicles to its networks. It now has partnerships with almost every car maker for connectivity. Which is a big deal for AT&T, as that does bring in extra money for their network. And it also shuts out their competitors.
Currently, a lot of vehicles are already connected. But with many OEMs working on electric vehicles, those will all be connected in some way or another as well. Especially for navigation, as these navigation apps are going to be adding ways to find charging stations, possibly pre-conditioning your EV so that it can get the fastest charging speeds possible and more. The future is electric, and it’s also connected.
